Fat & OilCarbs in Fats and Oils

Fats and oils are the third major compenent of a successful low carb approach. Fats and oils contain ZERO carbohydrates.

Fats are incredibly rich sources of energy. There are 9 calories in every gram of fat, compared to only 4 calories in protein or carbohydrates.

It's sadly ironic, because there has been so much negative media and just ridiculous attacks on the ill effects of eating fat. There is still a huge bias towards eating a low fat diet.

The fact of the matter is they are ESSENTIAL to the human diet. Your body needs fat to function well, in particular your brain. That fat can be vegetable or animal based. Fish and grass fed beef are a great source of Omega - 3 fatty acids, as well flax oil.

Avoid all hydrogenated and chemically altered fats. Naturally saturated fat, on the other hand, is not the villain it's been made out to be. A recent study even showed no correlation between saturated fat and heart problems.

Good sources of fat when eating low carb are animal fats, olive oil, flax oil, cheese, butter, cream, coconut oil, coconut milk, eggs, etc. If possible try to use only 'organic' fats, or fats that aren't exposed to pesticides or herbicides.

Fats are a critical component for low carb success. They help slow down absorption and can help prevent blood sugar spikes, help with inflammation and provide you with a long term stable form of energy which your body loves.
